Nanotech Foods – Will Nanotechnology Change What You Eat?

I am sitting reading nanotechnology research news and I’ve just found an interesting article about the US Department of Agriculture together with thethe National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

nanotech foodsIt was announced that they are giving more than 3.8 billion dollars in funding to support grants focused on using nanotechnology to find solutions to social challenges focused on the food industry environmental protection and nutrition.

What is known as I Nano science… they find very interesting and they had a university called Cornwell University that developed a new technology that can actually help bacteria sticking to medical equipment and food processing machinery.

Several universities has been given grants for developing new Nano science and nanotechnology, one of the most important issues in the future is to help to secure healthy food supply so we need to get rid of diseases and contaminants and other nasty things that can destroy our food.

The world is already in need of more food and we cannot produce food fast enough. Some believe that nanotechnology can be used to speed up the process. Today the food producers are required to have clean surfaces to keep bacteria, viruses and general contaminants away from our food under production.

Nano can actually keep a surface clean from bacteria for up to six months, and for shorter period of time, when it’s really required to keep an area completely clean from virus and bacteria on an instant.

There are super strong coating that can last for 5 days on the walls ceiling and flooring, you can also protect instruments made of steel by using a dedicated coating for that purpose.

In the future I believe that everything will be coated using nanotech coatings. Your car, your house, the inside of your house, your clothes, your shoes and your day to day appliances.

nanoscience strawberryWe probably also will see actual food being produced using nanotechnology, let me give you one example: Everybody say it so healthy to drink water  the challenge with water isn’t water anymore, it may look like water in the bottle that you purchase on 7/11 but if you actually read what it contains….. You may find, that for sure it’s not mineral water, most likely it is a basic distilled water product.

The problems with un-natural processed water is that the water molecules are quite large  and the cells in your body needs water to penetrate the cell to keep them alive and healthy.

The challenge however is, that if you can imagine that your cells have a mouth and they are going to eat the water molecule to stay healthy and have a mouth the size of an orange and the water molecule is the size of a football…. It’s very difficult for your cells to consume the water molecules.

Using nano science we can split the water molecules down in size making them the size of a sherry, easily consumed by the cells in your body. Naturally healthier cells means a healthier body, so trust me when I say, that in the future you will be drinking nanotechnology water.

Previously I have been speaking about the company Samsung that have developed what they call the silver nano refrigerator. This refrigerator is coated with a special silver nano paint to keep your food completely free from bacteria and viruses inside the refrigerator.

The same type of technology is also used for example air condition units.

I find this very fascinating…  small nano particles flying around the air that you cannot see with your eye but keeping you completely safe! How will this be able to change the way we  control our foods?  I think that these technologies will be applied soon as a standard in any container where you can store food, this will enable us to move food and fresh food longer distances and still keeping it fresh and free from bacteria. It can also be used in countries  where we need to store food for longer period of time the normal an example United Nations Food Program  this is an exciting time for us  in creating new ways of feeding the world.

You may wonder what type of chemical or material is used for keeping food free from bacteria in the world? I can tell you that’s the key word here is titanium dioxide is a type of a metal with high anti bacterial benefits and it has been used for storing food and maintaining food such as yogurt for many years already.

The Titanium additive can enhance or prevents  absorption of nutrients and  keep fruit fresher longer over a period of time.

Actually the nano packing industry is larger than a the Nano food industry.

nanotechnology superman pillPackaging exists that can provide protection from moisture and bacteria and there is also a special nano science that would absorb oxygen before it reaches the food.

Within the Nano packaging world we can list more than 1,600 manufacturers of nanotech consumer products. Thee manufacturers  is required to provide proof that the nanotechnology foods are safe as the FDA has not created any testing routines of its own.

European Food Safety Authority have done risk assessment reports on how do you eat and is addressing the issue of nanotech in food during the same.

The researchers believe that humans do not react negatively to nano additives, after all it’s the same food, it’s just split by Nano laser into much smaller pieces, example if you were to put a pizza through a Nano lacer you’d have 1 billion pizzas the size of a head of a pin.

Nano means small and it’s funny how I actually small they can be.  One of the most interesting benefits of not knowing food is actually that it can enhance the flavor of almost anything you eat  I don’t know if this is because your tongue absorbs to taste easier with a small molecules created  or it just simply makes it more yummy  Crystal’s are added to the food offering more taste and texture.

Don’t be surprised if soon will be selling the Nano pizza! Maybe Nanofixit will come up with one…

Besides helping us enjoying food, Nano tech can also be used to create small electronics that can help us to track food easier and tell you the truth about the region of where it came from and where it’s been, this is of course very useful in fresh foods and seafood.

After all, besides actually helping you store, save and enjoy food even more Nanotech can also be used for growing food, vegetables or fruits faster.

They are today exposed to chemicals to make them grow faster and last longer. Using organic Nano fertilizers his problem will be gone…

We are now looking at a new era of making your food grow faster in a completely organic way.

Do you feel hungry?

I do.
